Key State Laws
DC Code § 7-1009 (2016)
Establishes comprehensive drone regulations within the District of Columbia.
Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ)
The entire District is within the Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) and inner FRZ. Drone operations are effectively prohibited.
Restrictions
- Drone flying is effectively prohibited in all of DC
- 15-nautical-mile FRZ centered on Reagan National Airport (DCA)
- 30-nautical-mile SFRA covers all of DC and surrounding areas
- Special authorization from Secret Service/FAA/TSA required for any flight
Penalties
Federal criminal penalties including potential terrorism charges. DO NOT fly drones in DC.
Local Flying Notes
Washington DC is the most restricted airspace in the United States. Do not attempt to fly drones within the District. The FRZ extends into Maryland and Virginia. Violators face federal criminal prosecution.
