Key State Laws
SB 92 (2015)
The Freedom from Unwarranted Surveillance Act — restricts law enforcement drone use and creates individual privacy protections.
SB 766 (2017)
Prohibits flying drones over critical infrastructure facilities.
HB 75 (2023)
Expands local government authority to restrict drone operations in certain areas.
Restrictions
- No surveillance of individuals or private property without consent
- No flying over critical infrastructure
- No flying within 500 feet of jails and detention facilities
- Local governments may create additional restrictions
- Kennedy Space Center creates significant restricted airspace
Penalties
First offense: first-degree misdemeanor (up to 1 year jail, $1,000 fine). Subsequent: third-degree felony.
Local Flying Notes
Florida is one of the most active FPV states due to year-round flying weather. Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville have large FPV communities. Watch for frequent TFRs near KSC during launches.
