Montana Drone Laws & Regulations
Overview of drone regulations in Montana (MT). In addition to federal FAA rules that apply everywhere in the US, Montana has state-specific laws governing drone operations, privacy, and restricted areas.
Key State Laws
HB 586 (2017)
Restricts drone use over private property without consent and near wildfires.
Restrictions
- No flying over private property below 400 feet without consent for surveillance
- No flying near wildfire operations
- Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks prohibit drones
Penalties
Misdemeanor; up to $500 fine and/or 6 months jail
Local Flying Notes
Montana's vast open spaces are ideal for FPV flying but National Parks and wilderness areas are strictly off-limits. Summer wildfire TFRs are common.
