Remote ID Requirements for Drones
Remote ID is the FAA's system for identifying drones in flight. It broadcasts the drone's identity, location, altitude, and velocity, similar to a digital license plate. Remote ID became mandatory for most drone operations in March 2024.
Effective: March 16, 2024
Who Needs Remote ID
Most drone operators in the US must comply with Remote ID requirements.
- All Part 107 (commercial) drones must have Remote ID
- All registered recreational drones must have Remote ID
- Drones under 250g used recreationally are exempt
- Drones flying within FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs) are exempt
- Home-built drones must use a Remote ID broadcast module
Compliance Methods
Three ways to comply with Remote ID requirements.
- Standard Remote ID: built into the drone by manufacturer (all new drones)
- Remote ID broadcast module: external add-on for older drones ($30-$80)
- FRIA: fly within a designated identification area without Remote ID
- Broadcast via Bluetooth 5.0 and/or Wi-Fi Neighbor Aware Networking
What Remote ID Broadcasts
Remote ID transmits specific information about the drone and operator.
- Drone serial number or session ID
- Drone latitude, longitude, and altitude
- Drone velocity
- Control station latitude, longitude, and altitude
- Time mark
- Emergency status indicator
