Utah Drone Laws & Regulations
Overview of drone regulations in Utah (UT). In addition to federal FAA rules that apply everywhere in the US, Utah has state-specific laws governing drone operations, privacy, and restricted areas.
Key State Laws
HB 217 (2017)
Establishes drone regulations including privacy, critical infrastructure, and fire operations protections.
SB 111 (2019)
State preemption — prevents local governments from creating drone regulations.
Restrictions
- State preemption prevents local drone ordinances
- No drone surveillance without consent
- No flying over wildfires or near firefighting operations
- No flying over critical infrastructure
- National parks (Zion, Bryce, Arches, etc.) prohibit drones
Penalties
Class B misdemeanor; up to 6 months jail and $1,000 fine
Local Flying Notes
Utah is drone-friendly due to state preemption. Salt Lake City and Provo have active FPV communities. National parks strictly prohibit drones. Check for wildfire TFRs in summer.
